Japanese Cypress — Hinoki — is one of Japan's most revered natural materials. Used for millennia in Shinto shrines, imperial palaces, and the finest traditional bathhouses, Hinoki carries a distinct warmth, a delicate grain, and a subtle, clean fragrance that no synthetic material can replicate. In the UL1111-003, UNION engineers have taken this heritage wood and applied Compressed Natural Wood technology: subjecting the Cypress to controlled high-pressure compression that densifies the grain, significantly improves dimensional stability, and makes the wood perform like a precision-engineered material while preserving every visual and tactile characteristic of the original.
The wood section is paired with a stainless steel rose finished in UNION's Baked Powdery Black — a dark, matte counterpoint that makes the warm grain of the Cypress glow by contrast. The result is a study in duality: natural and industrial, warm and austere, ancient and precise. This combination reflects the essence of contemporary Japanese design philosophy: Wabi-sabi materiality expressed through rigorous engineering.

Suitable for standard mortise lock sets. The compressed wood section requires no special care beyond avoiding prolonged water exposure; the high-density compression makes it significantly more stable than unprocessed wood.
